Aussie parent-teacher association has called for cereal brands to be made available in Australia so young children can learn about the nutritional value of a food.
The Australian Cattle Feeders Association said the cereal industry needs to be more transparent about the health benefits of their products, saying it is a vital ingredient in many foods.
“We want to be able to educate our children about the importance of eating a good balanced diet, but they need to know that the Australian government does not subsidise it, they don’t subsidise food manufacturers,” Dr Joanne O’Connor, of the association, told the ABC.
Health experts have been urging the government to include a link to the Australian Dairy Council’s Nutrition Facts Label on cereal boxes.
But there is no such link for honey balayages, the AAFA said, and it is up to manufacturers to make sure their products are labelled properly.
In 2014, the ABC’s Breakfast program uncovered a link between the cereal and colic, which has now been linked to around 100 deaths a year.
