The honey industry is in a frenzy after Donald Trump's honey price announcement, with the price going up by $1.10 a pound or about 2.5% for the month. That's more than double what it was in June and is the highest price in five years. The price is expected to be $2.00 a pound for the first time since 2007, when the honey industry was hit by a price freeze. It could be a harbinger for a bigger price j...
By Sarah Rainsford and Ben FaganThe final question to ask when trying to decide whether honey is better than other honey is “Is honey better?”
The answer, in part, depends on whether you are a consumer of honey or an agronomist.
“You can’t say it’s better than others, but it is better,” says Dr Stephen Beresford, the director of the Honey Industry and Agriculture Research Centre at the University of Queensland.
“We’re using the word honey in different ways and I think that’s probably because we’re so used to seeing it as a nutrient, or something that’s going to give you health benefits,” he says.
“But now it’s starting to change in the way people think about honey.””
It’s becoming more about sweetness, more about flavour, more flavours, and that has a big impact on the taste of the honey itself.””

“The honey industry has long been an advocate for the use of honey as a nutritional supplement.
Honey is widely used as an ingredient in food products, including bread, cheese and jams, to name just a few.
In Australia, more than 100 million tonnes of honey is exported annually, and the number of tonnes of Australian honey exports has grown from 10,000 tonnes in 2001 to more than 300,000 this year.
The industry’s focus on honey has not gone unnoticed by the Federal Government.
In 2016, the Australian Industry Group (AIG) released a report, Honey, Honey and the Future of Australian Food, which found that Australia had become the largest exporter of honey in the world, exporting more than 6 million tonnes.”
Australia’s honey exports are among the largest in the developed world, and this is largely due to the strong demand for honey as food,” the report said.”
More than 75 per cent of Australia’s honey consumed is honey produced in the country and the majority of Australian households have a honey supply.
“In 2017, the Department of Agriculture and Food, with the support of the Department for Business, Innovation and Employment, announced that it would allow the importation of honey from overseas, with restrictions on the amount and timing of honey that could be imported.”
The introduction of a ban on honey exports from overseas has the potential to significantly reduce the amount of honey used to feed the global population, reduce the environmental impact of honey production and increase agricultural productivity,” the department said in a statement.”
Importing honey from abroad would also provide the Australian honey industry with more international honey to sell domestically.
“The Government has also been working on a plan to regulate the import of honey and the import and sale of honey.
In 2018, the Federal Parliament passed the Australian Honey Industry (HIM) Act.
The act was signed into law by the Prime Minister in December 2018 and is expected to become law by August 2019.”
This is really the beginning of the process of moving towards a new system of import control,” Dr Beresfords said.
It’s also hoped the ACT Government will implement the new legislation by July 2019.
The ACT Government’s new rules are set to make it a crime to import honey that is made from wild honey, or any honey that has been artificially or chemically treated to make the honey taste like it came from honey.
The legislation was passed with support from the Australian Federation of Honey Producers and other stakeholders.
Honey from wild bees would not be banned, but honey that had been artificially treated with chemicals would be banned.
The regulations are expected to allow the state to regulate beekeeping by limiting how many honey bees are allowed in a hive.”
The ACT will be able to regulate this to a much greater extent than most other states.””
We’re hoping that we can make it easier for people to have access to honey produced domestically.”
“The ACT will be able to regulate this to a much greater extent than most other states.”
The ACT Beekeepers’ Association said the new regulations will not affect the industry as a whole, and will only impact small, independent beekeepers.
“What the ACT Beekeeper’s Association is saying is that this will not impact the honey industry as an industry,” Dr Kavanagh says.
He believes the ACT has made the best of the situation by creating the Honey Provinces Initiative to help regulate the honey trade, which will now be overseen by the Department.
“You need to have a good control regime and that’s why the ACT is now setting up the Honey States Initiative, and we’re hoping the ACT will become a hub for beekeeping,” he said.
