— While Tupelo’s hip-hop scene continues to thrive, some residents are now feeling the effects of a downturn in the local economy.
A new report from the University of Arkansas shows that, at least since 2014, there has been a decline in economic activity and a corresponding decline in the number of jobs for local residents.
The report shows that the number and share of local jobs dropped from 17 percent to 11 percent, and the number employed in Tupelon’s retail sector fell from 21 percent to 14 percent.
It also shows a decline from a peak of nearly 50 percent in the 1980s to just 13 percent now.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median income for households in Tupellon in 2015 was $36,500.
That’s about $16,000 less than the median for the state.
